Winter 2025

Course Description

Much of the most beautiful and significant works in ceramic ever created embellish architectural wonders around the world, from mosques in Tunisia, palaces in Spain, brownstones in Jersey City.

In this course we will explore some of the options in creating ceramic tiles and how to image and pattern them with personal expressions. Tiles can be absolutely flat, relief, and anything in-between. Students will have the option of creating images; patterns in relief in plasticine first, and then having it cast in plaster for press-molding multiple editions. Various clays will be used strategically for their unique properties from stoneware to porcelain. Emphasis will be on a slow careful development of individuals tiles as individual works of art.
